Snippets of wisdom from Dr. Bernard Lafayette

Dr. Bernard Lafayette gave an inspiring talk today on Education as part of the  Summer of Peace 2012 program.

Here are some of the points he made (and illustrated with rich examples) that I will carry forward with me:

  • Take charge of yourself and the situation.  You cannot take charge of the situation unless you take charge of yourself.
  • We can learn from Martin Luther King that bad situations can be changed, so we can eliminate the doubt that we can bring about change. A second point we can learn is that we need to be trained in how to bring about change.  In every example where the civil rights movement brought about change, it won the sympathy, if not the outright support, of the majority.
  • We can make a better world. In fact, it’s a good idea and we should do that. Never think that it is not possible. We’ve got to get people in leadership positions who are trained in how to do that [Kingian Nonviolence].  We’ve got to learn to live together as brothers and sisters or die separately as foes.We are one people and we can live in peace and be of some real benefit to this planet for future generations to come.
